The phenomenon of extremism goes back hundreds of years of human civilization and affects all spheres of public life. Power, and especially political, always brings benefits to those who have it and turns into the object of lust for individuals and groups that seek to achieve and acquire power by any means. It can be noted with certainty that extremists have always acted and operated under the slogan «the end justifies the means», and to receive power they did not stop at any existing moral barriers. The article examines the phenomenon of political extremism in the context of conflict analysis. The manifestations of political extremism have become commonplace in mod-ern times. The political situation in the world causes a request for a study of this problem. The relevance of the research topic is conditioned, first of all, by the fact that extremism is an exceptional threat to Russia's national security, which is directly recorded in the Concept of Public Security of the Russian Federation. The activities of extremist and terrorist organizations are recognized as one of the main threats to state and public security, as is clearly shown in paragraph 43 of the National Security Strategy of the Russian Federation. The author comes to the conclusion that the main drawback of existing studies on this topic is the lack of a category of «conflict» when defining political extremism, and gives the author's definition of this socio-political phenomenon.
