D. P. Karanov

Abstract

There is the new course, Anthropology of Conflicts, which started at the Saint Petersburg University of the Humanities and Social Sciences in 2017. Like any other disci-plines it needs for a concise presentation, especially if it is a new subject based on the crossing of different methodological approaches. The goal of this paper is to consider the theoretical and methodological principles and main problems of this subject. The appearance of the subject is caused by two needs. Firstly, there is a need to diversify conflict studies with integration anthropological view into them. Secondly, there is a need to show new problems of conflict studies to students. In history anthropology has often been used as a philosophical subject or as biological science. The article shows that anthropology is between science and philosophy. The subject field of anthropology of conflict is analyzed there and a special attention is given to describing the main questions: the role of conflicts in the evolution, conspecific conflict behavior of primates, conflicts and anthropogenesis, the problem of conflicts between Homo sapiens and other human species, human specificity of conflict behavior, and so on. Besides, the paper shows the newness and the connection of this subject with other conflict studies.
