Values of Globalizing World: Common to All Mankind or Inhuman?

Т. В. Панфилова

Abstract

The matter of the notion «the value common to all mankind» is far from being obvious. Now these values are identified with values of liberalism. In Soviet social science the term «common to all mankind» was used to designate some living base common to all nations at all times. The moral norms common to all mankind were identified with mere norms of morality. Not all Soviet social scientists shared these views. A considerable part of them asserted themselves owing to some western ideas which were expounded then under the guise of criticism of bourgeois philosophy. As a result for one hand Soviet readers got acquainted with some interesting works of the western thinkers; on the other hand the liberal values were indoctrinated little by little to readers. Liberalism appeared as an alternative to socialism. But this alternative is false because both merits and defects of each one are historically transient.

There is a danger that liberation of person from social limits will become absolute and will deliver person from all social relations whereas they do a person human. Person will become atomized. This will have negative consequences which were described by E. Durkheim and E. Fromm. In the article «The End of History?» an ideologist of liberalism F. Fukujama showed that the liberal idea is exhausted and under comprehensive ruling of the western liberal democracy the society of consumerism lacking in spiritual culture will be established once and for all. Soviet critics of Fukujama corrected his conclusions partially but didn’t touch his basic principles. Thinkers of the past were in the more critical mood. O. Spengler and A. Toynbee warned against regarding democracy as the absolute value. A. I. Herzen warned against consideration of freedom as some absolute.

Today the values «common to all mankind» (in fact liberal values) transformed into the values of globalization. They lost their human content and became the pure ideological forms. Socially united humankind must become the subject of the global world. It will realize the world-historical activity and will regard itself as a value.
